Executive Committee Notes for 2007
1/16/2008
Midwest Junior Rowing Association
Executive Committee Meeting
2/18/07 – Columbus, Ohio
Present: Greg Harvie, Greg Hull, Chris Swartz, Mary Beth Blanding, Stephanie Harty (LOC), Richard Bell.
Most of the discussion centered on the Championship race schedule, our philosophy regarding the race, the progression system of Youth National qualifying events.
The question was posed: Are we working from what is perceived fair, or do we (MJRA) prioritize based on a philosophy? Does that philosophy include mirroring the Youth Nationals schedule (heats, rep’s, A,B,C finals)?
- We would like to what is fair for both sweep and sculling events as it relates to the progression system for Youth National qualifying events.
- In the next couple of years, we would like to add heats, rep’s and A,B,C finals to all Youth National events. However, this will mean that we will either have to change the Championship race to a three-day event, or we could have to limit each rower to one race. The question then arises; do we have heats and rep’s for events with less than 12 entries?
Changes to the 2007 Championship: (all present voting in the affirmative)
- We will be adding a 2nd 2x event for both men and women.
- Only 1 entry per team will be allowed in the 1st 2x events. Multiple entries will be allowed in the newly created 2nd 2x event.
- We will add rep’s for the 1st Varsity 4+’s, as these events tend to be oversubscribed. The rep’s will likely take place on Sunday morning.
- We will add rep’s to any Youth National qualifying event that goes over 18 entries.
Non-MJRA teams participating in the Championship race and their impact (St. Louis this past year).
- Greg Harvie will follow-up with USRowing to confirm that they will continue to allow the bumping down of qualifying spot when an “outside” team places in the top three.
- If a MJRA team is bumped out of a final, or rep, because of an “outside” team, that rep or final will go to seven boats with the MJRA boat taking the 7th spot.
The MJRA will be adding a code of conduct rule in both the MJRA by-laws and the Championship entry packet. Participants, coaches, and parents will be expected to abide by these rules. Flagrant disregard could result in future sanctions against the violating program.
Other items:
- The MJRA executive committee will allow an individual to race three times only when that person is needed to fill out a boat. The coach will still need to notify the LOC and executive committee prior to the given race.
- There will be NO mixed gender rowing allowed except for the coxswains.
- We would like to reiterate to all coaches that they should read the Championship entry packet very closely. There was still some confusion last year regarding the event order, and event numbers, being different from Saturday to Sunday.
